A big HELLO to our spray community.
We are excited about ILASS-94. In addition to the traditional strong line-up of technical papers, we introduce this year the TUTORIAL WORKSHOPS (a "town hall" meeting on issues critical to our community), present a special tour of two extraordinary Boeing facilities (the icing tunnel and the 747/767 flight production line), and experience the maturing of our popular organization of technical committees. We are especially thrilled with the slate of invited KEYNOTE LECTURES on extremely important and rapidly emerging spray technologies. We look forward to seeing you at ILASS-94!
Scott Samuelsen, Chair
ILASS-94 TO BE HELD IN SEATTLE WASHINGTON
The Seventh Annual ILASS-Americas Conference on Liquid Atomization and Spray Systems will be held May 31- June 3, 1994 at the Red Lion Hotel, Bellevue, Washington (phone: 206-455-1300). A special conference rate of $87 per night single occupancy, $97 double, is available for reservations made directly with the hotel before May 10. Indicate that you will be attending the ILASS-Americas 94 Conference to receive the reduced rate. The Red Lion Hotel is located 20 minutes northeast of the Seattle-Tacoma International. Shuttle Express (phone 1-800-487-7433) offers frequent service between the hotel and airport ($11 for the first person, $10 for each additional person).
The conference registration fee for ILASS-Americas members is $165 if received before May 10 ($185 after this date). Nonmember registration is $195 if received before this date, $215 if received after. Nonmembers can qualify for the member registration fee by joining ILASS-Americas concurrently with registering for the conference and paying a one-time membership fee of $20. The registration fee includes the cost of continental breakfasts, refreshments, bound abstracts, transportation to/from the Boeing tour, and a one-year personal subscription to Atomization and Sprays, the official journal of the international ILASS organizations. Additional details about conference arrangements may be obtained from Prof. John Kramlich, Local Arrangements Chair ILASS-94, Department of Mechanical Engineering, FU-10, University of Washington, Seattle, WA 98195 (phone: 206-543-5538, fax: 206-685-8047).
The technical papers to be presented at the ILASS-94 Conference have been organized into six sessions: Coatings and Materials Processing, Atomization and Spray Modeling, Performance of Spray Systems, Agricultural Sprays, Instrumentation and Measurement Techniques, Atomization Measurements, and Reciprocating Engine Sprays. Time has been allocated for Poster Papers and Exhibits each day of the meeting. Three Keynote Lectures will be presented at the conference:
I. Anderson, Ames Laboratory, U.S. Department of Energy
K. Giles, University of California-Davis
K. J. Coeling, Nordson Corporation
Time has been set aside for meetings of the ILASS technical committees. The Gas Turbine, Spray Combustion, Industrial Sprays, and Spray Modeling committees will meet on the first evening of the conference while the Agricultural Sprays, Physics of Atomization, Diesel Sprays, and Spray Measurements committees will meet on the second evening. Since the purpose of these committees is to foster discussion and interaction between participants with interests in specialized spray areas, all attendees are invited to participate in these meetings.
New this year, two tutorial workshops will be held on the Tuesday evening preceding the conference (7:30 pm - 9:30 pm). The topics selected for this year are: "Phase Doppler: Mass Flux Measurement" and "Spray Modeling: Trends/Expectations." Each tutorial will begin with select presentations with the majority of time dedicated to open discussion in a town meeting format. All are invited to attend and contribute to the discussions. Once you have enjoyed the reception, you can enjoy the stimulation of one of the two tutorial workshops.
Visit to Boeing
Friday afternoon will be devoted to a Boeing facility visit. Two stops are scheduled. The first is a tour of the Everett assembly plant where final construction of the 747 and 767 widebody aircraft takes place. This includes a walking tour through the assembly floor area. The group will then shift to Seattle for a visit to the icing wind tunnel facility at Boeing field. Transportation will be provided; the estimated time of return to the hotel is 5:30 pm. Comfortable walking shoes are a must!
ASTM E29.04 Subcommittee
The ASTM E29.04 Subcommittee on Liquid Particle Characterization will hold a one-day meeting on Tuesday May 31 in conjunction with the ILASS-94 conference. Contact committee chair Mr. Thomas Bassett, Bete Fog Nozzle, Inc., 50 Greenfield Street, Greenfield, MA 01302 (phone: 413-772-0846, fax: 413-772-6729) for details about the meeting.
As a result of the very successful ILASS-Americas 1993 Conference, the number of members of ILASS Americas increased from 295 in 1993 to 404 in 1994. Each ILASS member is urged to encourage colleagues, friends and students to become members by sending $20, name, address, Fax and E-mail numbers to Prof. Scott Samuelsen (Institute for Combustion and Propulsion Science & Technology, University of California, Irvine, CA 92717). Members who have not yet submitted Fax and E-mail numbers and information on changes of address should also send details to Prof. Samuelsen.
Atomization and Sprays JOURNAL
The number of issues of the journal Atomization and Sprays has been increased from four to six per year to accommodate increased demand for publication of papers. Authors presenting papers at ILASS-Americas, ICLASS, and any other conferences are encouraged to prepare archival journal versions of their research and submit them to Prof. Norman Chigier, Editor of Atomization and Sprays. Members of ILASS are urged to persuade libraries of their institutions to subscribe to A&S. The annual 1994 institutional subscription rate is $200 and the personal subscription rate for member of ILASS is $60.
ILASS INTERNATIONAL NEWS
At the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Winter Annual Meeting in New Orleans, (November 28-December 3, 1993), a symposium was held on Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer in Sprays, sponsored by the Multiphase Flow Technical Committee of the Fluids Engineering Division, and the Heat Transfer in Energy Systems, and Heat Transfer in Fire and Combustion Systems Committees of ASME.
